Oaths of the Ridermark Cover

Heya folks,

Just wanted to pass along the new cover for the latest upcoming The One Ring product, Oaths of the Riddermark.  The beautiful cover is by Sam Manley, check out the suspicious looking character on the right side just behind the king!

From Cubicle7:

Oaths of the Riddermark is a collection of connected adventures that take your company of bold adventurers through events in Rohan, and the trials of Thengel King, the father of Theoden. It’s a rip-roaring set of scenarios, and we’re really excited about it! It is the accompanying volume to Horselords of Rohan.

This sounds like another fantastic looking product to look forward to, I'll have my review up once I have a copy in my hands!

Ruins of the North - A Review

Ruins of the North is an adventure book that uses the material presented in Rivendell as the backdrop to a series of six adventures that range all over Eastern Eriador.  The adventures in this book are not directly linked but can be played out as a thematic campaign, one that sees the influence of the Witch-king of Angmar returning to Eriador!  This is a 144 page hard cover book, it's full color and contains more beautiful art by my current art idol, Jon Hodgson.  The adventures in this book are not for a new and inexperienced fellowship, you'll need a salty group of heroes or one that's composed of the new heroic cultures, the Rangers of the North or the High Elves of Rivendell that were introduced in the Rivendell supplement.  Let get to it, more after the break!

Tales from Wilderland - A Review

Tales from Wilderland contains seven adventures that sends your Fellowship all over the Wilderland region of Middle-earth.  These adventures can be played separately or linked together to form a longish campaign that escalates to a big finale.  I enjoyed all of the individual adventures, they are varied and interesting and work well together.  The first four can be played separately if you want and only the last three need to be played together.  The book is 160 pages long, has a softcover and is full color inside.  The adventures here are much more fleshed out and complete compared to The Darkening of Mirkwood which are more like adventure ideas.  More after the break!

The Darkening of Mirkwood - A Review

Heya folks!

I'm back with a review of another The One Ring RPG product; The Darkening of Mirkwood campaign.  Lets start off by saying this is another wonderful TOR accessory.  It's a hard cover, full color campaign that clocks in at 142 pages long.  This book has enough material in it to keep your fellowship playing for months if not years depending on how frequently you get to play!  More after the break!

Eureka!!

Two of my Holy Grail's!
Heya folks!

It's been a little while since I have been around here.  Things have been crazy in real life which hasn't left me much time for gaming.  So here's an update as to whats going on;

See that wonderful picture at the top of the page?  Both of those beautiful babies arrived today, I have been wanting them both for a very long time and I finally splurged and picked them up.  Both are complete and in decent condition, I purchased them from Noble Knight Games, somewhat expensive (especially Queen of the Spiders) but totally worth it!  Looks like I have some reading to do!  If you're not aware of Noble Knight Games go check them out, they are a great source for out of print stuff.

I have my feelers out there for a couple of artist interviews, I'm not going to say anything yet but I am pretty excited.  Lets hope everything works out, so keep an eye on this space!  I also signed up for a online figure drawing class so I can improve my depiction of the human form.  I will be starting soon and am really looking forward to it.

My wife and I also have very good news, we have a baby girl on the way!  She just entered the third trimester this week with a June due date so its been all hands on deck getting ready for our little bundle.  I am so excited and nervous, I'm going crazy!  The baby room is almost done and we have birthing classes this coming weekend as well as baptism classes with our church this Wednesday.  I never knew that one little human needed so much stuff!

Anyway I hope you are all well, take care and I'll be back soon!

Temple of Elemental Evil 3rd Edition Files

Heya folks,

Now that my run as DM of the ToEE is over, I wanted to provide you all with the files that I used to run the adventure.  Below is a link that contains everything that I needed to complete the Temple including conversions to 3e, images, and all kinds of additional stuff I found online.  I hope this is as helpful to you as it was to me!

Just a note, I cannot take credit for 99% of the stuff in this file.  Most of this is the fruit of others hard labor, I just downloaded it, made some small adjustments for my campaign and ran with it.  I was able to find Daniel Rivera, he did all of the stand alone NPC sheets and Banesfinger did the Verbobonc City Guide.  I could not find who had done the conversion of the Temple, it may have been someone named Majin over on EnWorld but I am not certain.  If anyone knows the original authors, please contact me so I can give them credit!

So on to the files, here is a breakdown of what is included in the .zip file;

1 - Hommlet - 3e conversion, NPC sheets and images of Hommlet and the surrounding areas.
2 - Moathouse - 3e conversion and images.
3 - Nulb & Temple Ground - 3e conversion, NPC sheets, Player Interlude to read to the players, Tower Ruins encounter sheet and images.
4 - ToEE Lvl 1 - 3e conversion, Earth Priests NPC sheet and images.
5 - ToEE Lvl 2 - 3e conversion, Air Priest NPC sheet, 2 Fire Priest NPC sheets, Water Preists NPC sheet, Feldrin & Brunk NPC sheets and images.
6 - ToEE Lvl 3 - 3e conversion, Falrinth & Sigmal NPC sheets, Falrinth's Spell-book's, Rebuter Riddle, Riddle of the Temple and images.
7 - ToEE Lvl 4 - 3e conversion.
8 - The Nodes - 3e conversion.
9 - Verbobonc - City of Verbobonc Guide and also images of the city.
10 - City of Greyhawk - Greyhawk City Descriptions, TSR1043 The City of Greyhawk, TSR9578 Greyhawk Players Guide and images.
11 - Characters - The Character Background Guide and Personality & Background Sheet, also a Excel Spell-book Spreadsheet and a Excel Spreadsheet called Party Info, I used this to track the party's current status, date, weather, major abilities, treasure, bank accounts and all kinds of other info, its a really handy sheet made by me!
12 - Flanaess - Beers of Flanaess, Greyhawk Calender and Greyhawk Deities.
13 - Orb of Golden Death - 3e conversion and a nice picture of the Orb by me.

Then there are a number of loose files:

Finale - The final conclusion for my party, includes the aftermath and awarding of goods and titles to the characters.

Iuz the Evil - 3e conversion of the demi-god.

Navigating the Finale - My own personal road map for the final bits of the temple, how to get to the end.

New Monsters for the ToEE - Juggernaut, Werejackle and Water Weird all converted to 3e.

Temple History -  As titled, my characters were in Verbobonc and did some research into the history of the temple, I gave them this to read.

ToEE Main and ToEE Nodes - binder cover-sheets I made, feel free to use them!

So that's everything (I think).  I hope you guys get some use out of this, feel free to post elsewhere but please at least link back to my site.  Thanks and enjoy!

**SPOILERS** Conclusion to the Temple of Elemental Evil **SPOILERS**

This last weekend my friend and I finally set aside time for the Temple of Elemental Evil!  December 2013 was the last time we got together to roll some dice in person.  We had been playing some DCC RPG via the Internet but really wanted to get back to our ongoing campaign.  I drove down to North Carolina to visit him and we crushed out the final bits of the Temple in what proved to be a satisfying conclusion to a VERY long campaign (8+ years!)

MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD - PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!  Story continues after the break!

The Fatal Funnel - Sailors of the Starless Sea

Last night my friend and I finished up our last session of Sailors on the Starless Sea, a level zero adventure for DCC RPG.  We played using Roll20, an online game table which I will be reviewing in the next week or so.  This was the first time either of us had played using the Fatal Funnel and level zero characters. We both had a blast and really enjoyed the experience.

Our initial party consisted of eight characters, we rolled for everything; names, professions, equipment, luck augurs, if there was a randomized chart, we used it. Stats were rolled in order with 3d6, this resulted in lots of lower scores but it also made having a 15 in an ability stat something to brag about! The party started with the following characters with the first four being my toons;

Dugar - Trapper (One ability score above ten!)
Aram - Grave Digger (Seven INT and LUCK)
Cerngoth - Smuggler (Seven PER and sixteen INT!)
Thaug - Dwarven Blackmith (Fourteen PER and INT, the party leader)
Imoagoth - Elven Chandler (Eight STA and fifteen INT)
Thremaim - Confidence Artist (Seven INT and eight in both AGI and STA)
Publio - Slave (Six STA and eight LUCK)
Leniqua - Wizards Apprentice (Seven STA and PER and a fourteen INT)

***SPOILER ALERTS***

I will be discussing the adventure from here on, read on at your own risk!!

It didn't take long before we took out first casualties, both Publio and Dugar were killed in the very first encounter battling the Vine Horrors! Starting with only one or two hit points and no Clerics to heal is not easy! The party buried their corpses and pressed on. Entering the ruined keep they found the alter room and were able to loot several suits of chain-mail and some weapons but left before encountering the Tar Ooze. Soon afterwards they discovered the Beast-men and Champion in the tower ruins and were ultimately victorious, though Thaug and Thremaim fell in battle. Four down, four left!  They freed the captive townspeople and recruited two new party members, Hekkador and Tonual.  Heading down the stone stairs they discovered a room with several chests and some discarded treasure.  Tonual spotted a hidden compartment in one of the chests but was killed by the trap which cut his hand off, he didn't last very long!  Moving on they found a large room with a brackish pool and murals that lined the walls, they also discovered four tattered robes which they brought with them.  After a nervous encounter with the floating skulls they took one with them as they continued to descend deeper towards the Starless Sea.

On the beach Hekkador failed his save while looking at the strange symbols on the menhir and suddenly attacked the party, he was filled with the urge to cut out someones heart and feed it to the Leviathan.  Luckily the rest of the party was able to subdue him before he caused any real harm.  They lit the candle on the menhir which drew the dragon boat closer to shore which they boarded.  Halfway to the ziggaraut the boat stopped in the water and the Leviathan made itself known by the score of tentacles that raised out of the water and hung ominously over the boat.  Hekkador knew they needed to present it a sacrifice due to his earlier mental state, but the party was unwilling to kill any of their own.  They readied for battle as the tentacles moved in.  Imogoth fell in the ensuing fight, Leniqua quickly jumped on his corpse and cut out his heart which she threw it into the sea to placate the beast.  The tentacles slipped below the waves and the boat continued onward.  Despite her quick thinking the rest of the party was a little distraught by her actions.

Moving onto the ziggaraut the four remaining party members, Aram, Hekkador, Leniqua and Cerngoth, donned the robes they had found and marched up the ramp towards the chanting beastmen.  Arriving at the top Hekkador discovered the skull he had taken from the pool room was vibrating and glowing, he tossed it into the hellish pit at the top of the ziggaraut.  This caused a large explosion which sent beast-men and party members flying in different dirrections.  They party reassembled and began slaughteriung the stunned beastment but they were unable to stop the beastman shaman from summoning the Chaos Lord.  As he formed they began retreating down the ramp in a fighting withdrawal.  Soon the Chaos Lord was upon them and a raucous battle followed. Luckily there were no deaths and all four lived to fight another day while the Chaos Lord was thrown low.

Soon after the his death the entire cavern began to shake and crumble, the intrepid party helped the townsfolk they had saved onto the dragon ship and they were carried away by a huge wave that swept through the cavern.

The Fatal Funnel lived up to its name.  Our losses were heavy but in some strange way I feel connected to the characters that did survive!  I don't think I would want to play like this all of the time.  There is a distinct lack of things to do each round for the characters as they do not have classes and the abilities that go along with them.  But if you have not tried playing level zero heroes, give it a shot, its a blast!

Dwimmermount has arrived! (Review) - UPDATED

Its finally here.

In April 2014 the Dwimmermount Kickstarter campaign was successfully funded to the tune of $48,756 with an initial goal of $10,000.  I am not going to get into all the drama that followed but it has taken several years for the final product to arrive, and boy it's a beauty.  Autarch did a fantastic job putting this together.  There are two versions available; Labyrinth Lord and Adventurer Conqueror King.  The version I have and am reviewing today is for LL.

This is a BIG, MEATY book, it's 408 pages of deep, dark adventure.  I have not had a chance to read all the way though this beast yet, its going to take some time.  I recieved three books; the adventure book, an illustration book and map book.

Dwimmermount on the left, Dungeoneer's Survival Guide on the right, River the cat in the background.
Lets get started with the Map Book.  This includes a wilderness map of the area surrounding Dwimmermount, the town of Muntburg and two page maps of all of the Dwimmermount levels.  Also included are the dungeon era illustrations and a four page side view of the entire dungeon.  Its all in black and white and is perfect bound.  The maps are big and easy to read, overall a very usable book.

Nice big maps.

Next up is the Illustration book.  This book is half the size of the map book, so roughly 8.5"x5.5".  It has a very nice color illustration on the cover that is printed on a very interesting material, it almost feels like a velour but is a paper.  I find that I keep rubbing the material, its very nice.  Inside are 44 black and while illustrations from various locations around the dungeon.  The likes of Jeff Dee, Steve Zieser and Erol Otus grace the pages, its a really nice book but I find myself wanting it to be a full sized 8.5"x11" booklet, the pictures are just to small for my liking.

Love that cover!
The illustrations are fantastic but should have been bigger!
Last but certainly not least is the main adventure book itself.  It starts with a very extensive table of contents and then its into the good stuff.  Chapter One covers the area around Dwimmermount.  Chapter Two covers the history of the dungeon.  Chapter Three is all about adventuring in the dungeon, everything from common knowledge of the dungeon to rumors and adventure seeds.  The following chapters cover the town of Muntburg which serves as the home town for adventures into Dwimmermount.  The Factions get a chapter and then its into the individual levels, one chapter each for a total of thirteen.

Following the levels are the appendices, all 91 pages of them!  They cover new magic items, new spells, new monsters, rival parties, the four worlds, Azoth and the secrets of the Turms Termax.  There's some really good stuff in here, lots of fun spells and monsters to throw at your players to keep them on their toes.

I'm really looking forward to digging  further into this book, it looks fantastic and varied enough to keep things fresh.  Unfortunately my issue with this adventure is the same I have with all mega-dungeons, I will never have the time to run this all the way through from start to finish.  One-shots are how I have to roll, my gaming time is limited these days so something we can start and finish in one or two evenings is best.  I'm sure I could use bits and pieces of this for smaller adventures, it may be the only way I get to use it!

Lots o' adventure!

If you have an itch for an epic mega-adventure, Dwimmermount will not steer you wrong.  It's a lot of material and is a steal at $10 on RPGnow.com for the .pdf.

Five beer steins out of five!

UPDATE 08/31/2014: I received an email from the Kickstarter campaign today, it stated that the Wilderness Map and Dungeon Tracker are also complete and shipping, I will update the  review once those two items have arrived!

Queen of the Spiders

Queen of the Spiders is still considered one of the greatest Dungeons & Dragon adventures ever printed.  It's also one that I have never owned and I have decided to rectify that.  I checked Noble Knight Games, they have no copies availible.  Next up was Amazon, they have copies running from $100 all the way up to $2936 (really?!).  I've been burned several times on Amazon with old modules, missing maps or in really bad condition so I'm a bit wary to purchase this piece from them.

What I need from you oh faithful readers is your feedback, I really cannot see paying $100.00 for an adventure, no matter how good it is.  Is there anyone out there that is aware of an alternate source (I already own a .pdf copy but would really like a hard copy) where I can pick up my own dead tree version?  Is anyone aware of some little out of the way online store that might have a copy that will not cost me an arm and a leg?

This might be a long shot but I figured its one worth taking.  I will be wrapping up my Temple of Elemental Evil campaign soon and was thinking of running all the way through Queen.  Anyway, thanks in advance!

**SPOILERS** Temple of Elemental Evil **SPOILERS**

I had a chance to get together with my old gaming buddy this weekend and smash out some more of the Temple of Elemental Evil.  We began playing six to seven years ago and get together when we can.  We were (and still are) living in different states and don't get to play very often.  When we started out we were using VOIP and a whiteboard program (before google+ became the way to play) and then fell into a once or twice a year in person session.  It felt good to get back to DM'ing, we last played about a year and a half ago so I was feeling a bit rusty at first.

This is the first time I have run the Temple as DM having previously played through it once before when I was a wee lad.  It's my favorite adventure of all time and it was really fun to spend all weekend rolling dice, eating pizza, drinking beers and embracing my inner geek.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

The party:
Vallon - Human Fighter & Surly Bastard
Marhev - Human Fighter (my toon but being run by my friends girlfriend)
Jess - Human Cleric with a dark soul
Kaila - Elf Wizard (holds the record for most deaths)
Rahan - Elf Rogue (nicknamed The Finisher for his ability to drop baddies with his bow, after spending the entire fight missing them)

Things started with the party heading back to the Temple from Verbobonc, Jess (the lawful good cleric) wanted to sack Nulb and put the occupants to the sword but was dissuaded by her fellow companions. They made their way to the Water Temple as they had previously cleared out the entire third floor except for pool room. They were unable to figure out the acid pool and almost lost Rahan after he jumped in the acid but was able to climb out of the pool before melting into a puddle of goo.  After some general shenanigans they decided to move on and attempt the fourth floor of DOOM.  Over the next few hours they explored all of the rooms south of the main temple and found them all to be empty of creatures, leaving them mystified.  Near the main altar of worship a portal opened that cut off their escape and all of the monsters from the level began pouring out.  Darting down a side hallway they stumbled into the portal that lead to the Air Node.  I had hoped to drive them into the nodes, I'm not sure if my players would have volunteered to go through without a push so it worked out well!

Upon entering the Air Node they found themselves pummeled by flying debris and they sought cover.  Heading east they began working their way counterclockwise around the edge of the node.  They spotted a white dragon flying high above them giving them a bit of a scare.  Pressing on they entered a cave system and found a dead Cloud Giant, his body blasted by ice.  Pushing further into the cave system they encountered a Frost Worm and a vicious battle ensued!  Using its Trill ability the Frost Worm froze several of the party in place and proceeded to tear into the rest.  Kaila was killed (again) by the beasts breath weapon and was finally felled by Rahan The Finisher (after he missed multiple times during the fight).  My friend was pretty upset that Kaila died (again), shes already fallen behind in levels due to her previous deaths but he decided to try and save her by casting Gentle Repose until we could get her resurrected.

Feeling defeated the party moved on, much more cautiously than before as we were now lacking our wizard. Continuing around the outer edge of the node they came upon a large cave filled with a giant boulder field.  Shortly after they began to maneuver through the field a small white dragon flew from deep in the cave and glided out the entrance through which they had come.  Rahan donned his invisibility ring and scouted ahead while the rest of the party took refuge in the shadows of the boulders.  He discovered the dragons treasure horde and spent a few rounds picking through it hoping the dragon would not return.  He found several small items of value including a silver box with a aquamarine gem in it.  Returning to the party they realized the gem was the perfect size to fit into the golden skull they were in possession of (the Orb of Golden Death).  Seizing the gem from the box they were all suddenly ripped from the Air Node and deposited in a splash into the center of the Water Node!  Shocked and surprised this is where the adventure ended as we were all a bit tired.

I am looking forward to playing again but it will probably be some time.  My players were sure that the fourth level was the final one and were surprised at the inclusion of the nodes.  They are slowly piecing together what they need to do to bring the temple low.  Next time should bring the conclusion to our many year adventure.  I'm looking forward to it!

Orb of Golden Death

For the last few years I have been running a 3e conversion the Temple of Elemental Evil.  It's the first and only campaign I have run in 3e and will probably never play 3e again once this adventure is complete. My feelings on 3e aside, I was looking around for a decent image of the Orb of Golden Death that I could print out for my players and was unable to find anything I really liked.  So I made my own version in Procreate on my iPad.  Above is a time compressed video of the creation of the drawing.

Our adventure will be wrapping up soon and once it does I will be making available all of the materials I used to run the Temple including the 3e conversion and the different play aids I used.  Much of this stuff was created by other people, I just pulled it all together and made some edits for my campaign.  If you have never had a chance to play the original Temple of Elemental Evil I highly recommend it, I have played once as a player and now a second time as a DM.  Its a classic adventure that is a blast!

Feel free to use the image below for your own adventures!

New Barrowmaze Crowdfunding on the Horizon

Hey folks,

I just wanted to pass along the news that Greg over at Discourse and Dragons has announced he will be running a new crowdfunding campaign for Barrowmaze Complete starting in January 2014.  This new book will combine the two existing Barrowmaze Dungeons into one mega-module and will include new material, art and layout.  The amazing Erol Otus has been tapped to do the new cover.

I already own both Barrowmaze and Barrowmaze II, they are both amazing products but I would be willing to contribute to a new combined module.  The best news for me is that he is currently working with the guys over at Otherworld Miniatures to produce a Barrowmaze box set, awesome news indeed!

The original announcement can be found here: Barrowmaze Complete

Against the Slave Lords - A Review

I received the second AD&D adventure compilation in the mail this last week and am once again very pleased with my purchase!  For those of you who do not know, Wizards of the Coast is in the process of releasing all kinds of old D&D products, core and adventure books from multiple editions.  Its nice to be able to pick up in print a nice shiney new version of the old adventures that I either lost or never purchased. Against the Slave Lords is the newest adventure compilation, it contains previously published adventures A1-A4 as well as a brand spanking new introduction adventure A0 Danger at Darkshelf Quarry.

This offering is very similar to the last adventure book, Dungeons of Dread.  It is a hardcover book with a very nice cover that features some slight embossing.  There are 162 pages of adventure and maps printed on a nice glossy paper and at the end of the book are twelve pages of black and white fan art.  Its a great looking book that does not suffer from the poor image quality of the first release.  My biggest gripe with both books is that there is no separate map booklet, all of the maps are printed at the end of each adventure, so you will need to make copies or you will find yourself flipping back a forth a lot.  I have heard that Wizards of the Coast will be releasing .pdf's of all of the maps but I was unable to find them.  Maybe my internet-fu is not as good as I believed (or maybe they are lazy and have not released them yet).  If anyone locates them please link them in the comments!

The adventures included are as follows: A0 Danger at Darkshelf Quarry, A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity, A2 Secret of the Slavers Stockade, A3 Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords and A4 In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords.  There are introductions to each by Skip Williams, David "Zeb" Cook, Harold Johnson, Allen Hammock and Lawrence Schick.  The art is fantastic throughout with nice crisp reproductions, though I found the new art in A0 to be mediocre and not as "old school" as the rest of the book.

The Slave Lord series is consistently rated as one of the great AD&D adventures of all time.  This is a great new package with a brand new introductory adventure and it is not one that should be missed.  Buy this book if you do not already own this series, it is Drunk Umber Hulk approved!

Dungeons of Dread - Review

Om nom nom nom.

I received my shiny new copy of Dungeons of Dread in the mail yesterday and had a chance to do a cursory flip through the book last night before I went to bed.  I must say I am pretty happy with what I have seen so far, its a really nice compilation of four S-Series AD&D adventures.  For those of you who do not know, Wizards of the Coast is in the process of re-releasing older versions of D&D, they have already released the AD&D Players Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, Monster Manual and Unearthed Arcana, all under the moniker of 1st Edition Premium.  They are also going to be releasing the second edition books this way as well.

I'm happy that the version of D&D that I cut my teeth on is now available for purchase.  I will not be buying these core books as I still have my old dusty and moldy copies.  Hopefully it will give some of the younger generation a chance to experience the origins of D&D.  The books that I am most looking forward to are the adventure modules, I do not own many of the original adventures, so Dungeons of Dread and forthcoming Against the Slave Lords module have me pretty excited!

A-Series, flashy new cover!

Anyway back to my new DoD book.  The cover is fantastic, I love the art and it has a nice texture with a little embossing.  Inside the pages are printed on a nice smooth paper.  There is a forward by Lawrence Schick, a table of contents and then the adventures begin!  The book includes S1: Tomb of Horrors, S2: White Plume Mountain, S3: Expedition to Barrier peaks and S4: The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth.  All maps are unfortunately included in the main book, there is no separate map-book, which will lead to lots of flipping back and forth.  There may be downloadable maps on Wizards of the Coast site but I have not had a chance to snoop around.  I also have a complaint with the first image in the book, it looks terrible, very fuzzy and out of focus, almost like someone did not know how to run a scanner.  Other than that one piece all of the art looks great, there are some really wonderful black and white images.

Its a pretty hefty book, four adventures clocking in at 192 pages total.  The reproductions are supposed to be exact, there have been no modifications to the original adventures.  If you do not own these four adventures this is a great buy, I am very pleased with how this has been put together.  I am looking forward to more of the AD&D adventure modules in the future, hopefully we will see a reprint of The Temple of Elemental Evil, one of my all time favorites.
