Today we're going to take a look into the mid-scene change.

Changing things up mid-scene is a great way to create tension and narrative complexity to your game. In order to do this, however, first you need to have the players split up the party. This is more commonly done in investigative games where everyone is tracking down multiple leads and clues. In a more standard fantasy roleplaying game, there may be large sections where the party is all together. (We will be discussing techniques for splitting up the party in a future post)

A WORD ABOUT TIMING. As Gamemasters, we want to take advantage of
player involvement and immersion to time our mid-scene change. Do you want to change the scene just before the player announces their action or just after? After a dramatic reveal or halfway through an encounter? When the party is split up, it can be a challenge to keep the spotlight moving and keeping all of the players engaged.

One of the challenges of Gamemastering is keeping players involved when their characters are not directly involved in a scene. Some systems, like Star Trek Adventures, do this by having the players switch to support characters when the main characters are not involved in a scene. But for most other systems, you need to control the flow of the spotlight and this may mean cutting mid-scene at a time you didn't plan on!

TYPES OF MID-SCENE CHANGES

There already exists a language for changing scenes, so why not use it? We will discuss scene transitions in Part 3, but the mid-scene change is a bit more complex to pull off and doesn't use every transition technique.

Here are a couple of effective transitions that will work mid-scene. This is by no means an exhaustive list but I hope it will inspire some ideas for your own.

THE SKY WIPE. With a physical camera, a sky wipe is done by panning the
camera up to the sky and then it comes down showing a new location. One way
to do this mid-scene in a tabletop roleplaying game is to have your split party on either side of a
door or other object and you cut between both groups. You can ratchet up the tension by having different complications affecting each group. Another way could be after the party splits up and is entering a location from different vantage points. Ranged combatants will have to exercise caution so as to not get their fellow party members caught by friendly fire!

THE SOUND MARKER. This is a common transition done with physical cameras and can be very effective in tabletop roleplaying games as well: A lone party member in a darkened room lights a torch or match. As you describe the sound of the torch igniting, you then cut away to another scene. Or perhaps the party scout moves ahead of the main group and springs a trap or a wall comes down separating them from the rest of the party. As you describe the sound of the massive stone barrier grinding into place, cut away to a new scene.

As mentioned in Part 1, music is particularly effective in tabletop roleplaying games, especially if you have set themes that you use over and over. In that case, simply playing the theme will indicate to the players that the scene has changed and they will respond with joy! (Or horror!)
We have a lot of ground to cover, so let's jump right in!

"What do you do?" is probably the most-asked question by anyone running a tabletop roleplaying game. It's also one of the most exciting questions, fraught with potential because the answer can be anything. During a Call of Cthulhu session I was running a few years ago, my then-9 year old daughter (who had been listening peripherally), answered, "I turn into a cat and sneak through the window!"

Of course, as we get older, we tend to interpret that question to infer that the answer will be something possible within the rules of the game we are playing but that still a whole lot of wriggle room on the part of the player.

As a Dungeon Master/ Game Master/ Keeper of Eldritch Lore/ Lore Master/ etc we have a very powerful tool in our GMing box that can help us fine-tune that response to a point where we can seem pre-cognitive: setting the scene.

A GM sets the scene in many ways: by revealing a new section of a map laid out before the players, describing strange runes on an ancient door, what lies in the chamber beyond that very door, or a malevolent smile as a player tells you they are opening the door without checking for traps first. A scene can also be set up by playing music (Music is a great way to set up a mid scene change -- more of that in the next post), or in stopping music that was already playing.

Our imagination will go a long way in helping us come up with colorful descriptions, but we also shouldn't turn our nose up at having a list in front of us with key evocative words or even pre-scripted text if it will help add atmosphere and drama. (Yup, there will be posts about that as well)

Let's listen to a couple of examples from Episode 1 of my of actual play podcast running Horror On The Orient Express for Call of Cthulhu 7th edition.

This scene is set up by means of a verbal "establishing shot", a top-down explanation of the world outside the scene itself. The virtual camera then closes in on a specific location (a music hall), and then a specific person (the Player Character). We learn that London is gearing up for the holidays and is in a festive mood even though there hasn't been any snowfall yet. We know the date and time of day. We also learn that the Player Character is a performer.

Here's another example from the same episode:

This scene is set up a little different. We get just the basic details here: a priest is relaxing in his apartment attached to a London parish, reading the newspaper on a Sunday afternoon, when he receives an unexpected telephone call.

One thing that both of these scenes have in common is the lack of the question, "What do you do?" One reason for that is because I typically reserve that question for when I have set up a dilemma for the players (There will be a post on dilemmas coming soon). Since I don't need specific information, I'm willing to wait and let the player carry the story forward. With less experienced players, you may need to plant a bit of action into your setup so that they know that's their cue to act, but more experienced players will interpret that pause as an invitation to join in the storytelling at that point.

Gamemasters will want to exercise caution in how much detail they put into setting up a scene, there are times when you will want (and need) a longer setup, and times when you will want to keep it short and sweet. Very long stretches of read text can feel like you are railroading the players, however, and that they are not contributing to the world at all, just moving through a maze set up by the GM.

I hope you found this short discussion on setting up a scene helpful! There are several other aspects to setting up scenes that will be covered in future posts. How about you? How do you like to set up a scene? Does it differ when you are running a pre-written adventure compared to a home brew one? Comment below and keep the conversation going!

Heya folks!

I've been away for a bit, busy with life and all that. I'm currently involved in an ongoing The One Ring campaign that I am having a ton of fun with, we play once a week via Roll20. I'm playing one of the Dwarves of the Lonley Mountain named Nur. I put together a couple of documents to help me role-play a dwarf and I wanted to share them with you all.

I do not take any credit for the information in these documents, it has all been stolen off the interwebs, most of it via straight copy and paste. I just wanted to pull together all of this knowledge on Dwarves to help create and play my character. If anyone has an issue with these documents please let me know and I will pull them down.

The first is a Khuzdul/English document. It has various phrases and words and is divided up into several sections on various topics. Most of this was pulled from a blog called Midgardsmal by David Soto, he worked on MERPS and did some translations of Neo-Khuzdul for the LOTR and Hobbit movies since there was so little original Khuzdul written by Tolkien, his site is awesome so check it out. Here is the document:

KHUZDUL

The second document is everything I could locate on Dwarves and their history, places of importance, specific Dwarves, their wars and smithing/treasures. Most of this is copied straight from various articles on Tolkiengateway I just wanted everything in a handy document to use while playing. Here is the document:

DWARVES OF MIDDLE-EARTH

Well I hope that helps all you dwarf fans and role-players out there. Like I said, if anyone has a problem with these documents please let me know and I'll pull them down. Take care people! Heya folks!

So today I have a little something for you all, I mistakenly pre-ordered TWO copies of Xanathar's Guide to Everything for DnD5e. I was a little excited for it and forgot that I had already pre-ordered it when I placed the second order. Yes I'm a geek and a fanboy. In the spirit of the holiday season I am giving away my extra copy to one of my readers.

Make a comment below and I'll enter your name in a random drawing that will be done on Saturday 12/16/2017. I do not promise that it will be shipped in time for Christmas! Good luck to you all and I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!Jason Carterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03035794816254802441noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7713201556953635246.post-73873284086647126022017-12-01T12:40:00.001-05:002017-12-01T12:40:33.686-05:00The One Ring - Moria

Hey folks,

I'm back with yet ANOTHER The One Ring review! Bree was recently released in .pdf format and I believe that the dead tree versions are currently being shipped. I'm hoping mine arrives soon as this is another fantastic Cubicle7 product! More after the break!

Bree covers the region west of Rivendell but east of the Shire which is not included in this book. It's 112 pages in full color. The first section is titled A History of Bree-land, it's a short two page overview of the region of Bree-land and the four main villages. It moves along to a chapter called Bree-land & Around. This is the region atlas section of the book, it describes Bree-hill, the Roads, Western Bree-land, The Hall of Orgulas, The Chetwood, Bree proper, New-town, East Row, The Forsaken Inn, Staddle, the Smial of Staddle, Combe, Archet and ends with a very nice map of Bree illustrated by the always talented Jon Hodgson. Jon's art as always is through out the book, he is joined by several other talented artists including Sam Manley who illustrated the beautiful cover with the welcoming looking Prancing Pony. This chapter also includes the numerous NPC's that inhabit the region as well as several new Fellowship Phase undertakings. There are some region specific rules including a new hazard for the Chetwood and a new rule titled The Melancholy of Combe for heroes that heal corruption in that area.

The Prancing Pony is the next chapter and focuses entirely on the famous inn. NPC's are described and given stats, all three floors of the inn are illustrated with some very simple yet elegant maps and the various rooms are described in some detail. There is a random chart to roll up various guests in the common room which is a lot of fun. It's a very handy chapter if your adventurers seek refuge in the Prancing Pony.

An Empty Land is next, two pages detailing the land of the surrounding region, the actual flora and fauna, the terrain, the weather and the emptiness of the lands. Its a handy bit of information for the Lore-master, I wish there was a few pages more of this!

Adventuring in Bree follows. This four page chapter covers adventure hooks for adventures set in the Bree-land area. This is really nice! These are short one or two paragraph ideas that can be used by the Lore-master to create an adventure around, they are region specific and deal with the various residents and lands of the region. There are five Fellowship Phase undertakings that round out the chapter. This is another great chapter for the Lore-master, short but to the point.

Next up is Men of Bree. This is a repeat of the Men of Bree included in the Adventurers Companion, nothing new here! It's nice to have it included in this book but its five pages that could have been used for something else.

The rest of the book (65 pages) is taken up by three adventures. The first is Old Bones and Skin which starts at the Prancing Pony and involves a Troll and lost treasures. The second adventure is titled Strange Men, Strange Roads and is meant to played as a follow-up to the first adventure. The fellowship travels to the Forsaken Inn where their expected contact is missing, this starts an investigation that takes the fellowship all over Bree. The last adventure is called Holed up in Staddle and is the final part of the three part series, it takes the heroes into the Old Forest and around Bree.

Overall this is a fantastic book, great regional information and loads of detail for the Lore-master. The three adventures are nice but take up the bulk of the book. I would have preferred a combined Bree/Shire book without the adventures but I'm an impatient man, I guess I'll just have to wait for the long promised Shire book as patiently as I can! This book is worth the money and I highly recommend it!Jason Carterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03035794816254802441noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7713201556953635246.post-90705684112609402692017-07-19T08:02:00.001-04:002017-07-19T08:03:48.837-04:00Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne Kickstarter is live!

Heya folks,

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up, Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne Kickstarter went live yesterday and was funded 2 1/2 hours after it started! More after the break!
Based on the Pendragon RPG system, this game transports players to Europe in the 9th century, its focus, much like Pendragon is on players as knights. The text for the book is 708 (!!) pages long and is already complete, they are running the Kickstarter to fund the art. There are only two levels of pledge, a limited number of stretch goals (new adventures that are unlocked at each additional $5K over the original goal - all of these are also already written) and a couple of add-on's including dice and a print copy of Pendragon 5.2 (which has not been released in print until now). Overall it looks like a solid Kickstarter campaign, its not overblown with stretch goals and the writing is already done so hopefully there will be no issues with delivering the final product.

Map in a work in progress but shows the regions covered.

I'm super excited for this product, I LOVE the Pendragon system and own just about everything ever created for it and the Carolingian Empire has long been a favorite period of history for me. It will be fun to be able to play during this amazing period of history!
Head on over to the Kickstarter page to fund this project, they have already surpassed several of the stretch goals and there is still thirty-seven days left!

I’ve been drawing since I was very young and I was fortunate
enough to have people in my life put some sketchbooks in my hands throughout my
childhood, my grandfather being the one in most cases. He continuously
encouraged me to use my talents and was always a great advocate for me to draw.
So, when my older brothers were working out that top secret code that relayed
the location to the rebel base aka -their new tree house hidden somewhere out
in the woods that little brothers weren’t included in -I’d take my sketchbook
out and draw in it. Mostly dinosaurs and monsters and little stick-figure army
men fighting them. This would later become drawing monsters on the dungeon maps
when we would be playing Dungeons and Dragons or Star Frontiers.

How would you
describe your style and where do you draw your inspiration from?

My style of drawing reflects being a product of/and growing
up with the science fiction and fantasy of the late 70’s and throughout the
80’s. I was captivated by anything that dealt with spacemen and dinosaurs,
super heroes, robots, strange aliens and monsters. In creating my work, I
strive to make it part perilous, heroic, weird, and yet still containing all
the whimsy and ridiculousness which can and should exist in these little
glimpses of other worlds.

In terms of where I draw my influences from, I would say my initial
exposure to these things was through a couple of old books from the very small
local and school libraries, a sparse collection of comics and what was being
broadcast on the two channels we got at the house over the antennae which could
be hit or miss depending on which direction the wind was blowing.

Despite these limitations however, we managed to cultivate
an enthusiastic interest in sci-fi and fantasy! My brothers and cousin Jesse have
given me nothing but constant support and encouragement in making my work and
relentlessly add books, movies and anything else they can find to my
reading/viewing list. If not for them, I would never have found even a fraction
of the amazing and inspiring things that have gone on to influence my work at
this point.

I’ve been influenced by a lot of artists and still find new
ones as I keep searching around but in terms of my fantasy work I would put
Hayao Miyazaki, Erol Otus, David A. Trampier, Alex Raymond, Michael Whelan,
Frank Frazetta, and Jeffrey Jones way up on the list.

your style?

I’ve been playing D&D since the early 80’s when my
parents got my older brothers Star frontiers and the Moldvay Basic Set for
Christmas. Eventually, I was included, but I remember really liking all the
illustrations when I got the chance to look through them. We played this
version of D&D until my brother got the AD&D books but that was as far
as we ever went as editions go. My high school friends and college buddies
played 2nd Edition D&D but my brothers and I always stuck with either B/X or
AD&D which we played up through to our adult years.

With my own kids, we try to get a game in when the schedules
work but it can be hard without a set schedule which is why they like DCC RPG
which has a “pick-up and run with it” aspect that works for us.

I like the story-telling aspect of illustration work the
most which is what most RPG art is attempting to do. You are trying to give
some visual inspiration to both the GM and players that serves to enhance the written
aspect of the encounter. One of my principle aims when working on a project is
putting in enough detail to describe what is happening and leaving enough out
of the drawing to get them to wonder what else might be around the corner or
whether the giant horned skeleton is going to rise from his throne to strike
down those greedy little murder-hobos…

How did you get
involved with DCC RPG?

I was working on a number of things here and there in the
OSR circles and after a while sent some drawings over to Goodman Games to see
what he thought. Joseph Goodman wrote back about a project he was working on
that he thought my style would work well with. Completing “Y is for Yellow” and
the end sheet illustrations for the Dungeon Alphabet was a great experience
both in the production of the work and in Joseph’s art direction which is
always insightful and keeps me on my toes! The next assignment Joseph had for
me was some interior illustrations for DCC RPG!

What was the last

Reading is one of those things that I get to do on a limited
basis, but I love to read! Sadly, to get drawings done I can't read as much so
I finish a book about every three or four months. Most recently, I finally
finished Gene Wolfe's Return to the Whorl. Other favorites include Vance's Dying
Earth, Demon Princes, Planet of Adventure series, Gene Wolfe's New, Long, and
Short Sun, Phillip Jose Farmer's Dark is the Sun, Leiber's Lankmar Books, HP
Lovecraft, and Clark Ashton Smith amongst others.

What superpower would
you have and why?

The power to ignore the need for sleep. I would get more
done.

Where can the readers
go to see your art?

http://petermullen.webs.com/

Are there any books,
videos, or other forms of media that you would recommend to new artists to help
them learn?

In this digital age, everything is at your fingertips.
Whatever and whenever you want it! I’d say that when you find something you
like or are drawn to for whatever reason, to stick with it and explore why you
like it. Ask yourself how you would have done it differently and why?

I mostly learned to draw by seeing other things like movies,
comics, and from ideas after reading books and then drawing in my sketchbook
constantly. Movies like Forbidden Planet, Dragon Slayer, Dark Crystal, Star
Wars, A Boy and his Dog, Bakshi’s Lord of the Rings and Wizards, Light Years,
and shows like Outer Limits, Star Trek, the Herculoids and of course Thundarr
the Barbarian all had a huge influence on me and my work.

Lastly, any words of
advice for aspiring artists?

I always strongly suggest to my art students to keep a sketchbook and draw in it to explore ideas and experiment with various techniques as much as possible which goes with the philosophy that we learn by doing which in this case is drawing.
